An officer from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Missouri received commendation from the Department of Homeland Security for providing lifesaving medical assistance. Officer Curtland Sawyer acted promptly during a critical situation that unfolded while he was driving home.
Officer Sawyer, assigned to ICE’s St. Louis sub-office, encountered a severe accident involving a vehicle and a tractor-trailer near Festus, Missouri on July 11. Upon witnessing the crash, Sawyer immediately stopped to help the injured driver.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, Sawyer applied a tourniquet to the driver’s arm, effectively halting life-threatening bleeding until emergency medical technicians arrived. His quick response possibly saved the driver’s life.
DHS Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis remarked, “ICE law enforcement officer Curtland Sawyer immediately delivered lifesaving medical care to a driver who was involved in a serious collision with a tractor-trailer in Missouri. Officer Sawyer is a hero.”
She further emphasized the dedication and readiness of ICE officers, encouraging the public to express gratitude for their service when possible.
Officer Sawyer’s actions are part of a series of rescue operations highlighted by DHS recently. Last month, an ICE officer in Florida rescued a child from a swimming pool and administered CPR. Additionally, ICE officers in Milwaukee assisted a woman from an overturned vehicle after a collision.
