The Rise of Lamine Yamal: A Story of Talent and Gratitude

Millions around the world will tune in to watch Lamine Yamal and Spain take on France in the World Cup semi-finals on Tuesday. Among those viewers might be two figures who have played crucial roles in the life of the Barcelona superstar, although their exact contributions remain somewhat mysterious to the public.

In line with Spanish tradition, Yamal, who celebrated his 19th birthday on Monday, carries two surnames—Nasraoui from his father and Ebana from his mother. However, like many Spanish footballers, including his former Barça coach Xavi and teammate Pedri, Spain’s No. 19 is professionally known by his first name. This name consists of two parts, akin to Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique.

Whether playing for Spain or Barcelona, the name displayed on Yamal’s jersey is: Lamine Yamal. Official documents like his passport and national ID card list his full name as Lamine Yamal Nasraoui Ebana.

The name Lamine is popular in Arabic and translates to honest or trustworthy, derived from Al Amin, an honorary title once bestowed upon the prophet Muhammad. Yamal is a variation of the common Arabic name Jamal, which means beauty, grace, or charm. These names seem apt to those who have witnessed his football skills.

Both of these names would be typical for children of immigrants born in Catalonia in July 2007. Yamal’s father, Mounir Nasraoui, hails from Morocco, while his mother, Sheila Ebana, was born in Equatorial Guinea. Yet, Spanish media widely report that both names were chosen by the parents to honor two friends for their support.

At the time of the birth, Ebana was 16, and both she and Nasraoui would certainly benefit from financial assistance to navigate new responsibilities. In their story, two male friends, one named Lamine and the other Yamal, were particularly helpful during these times.

In appreciation, the parents chose to name their son Lamine Yamal Nasraoui Ebana.

Since then, the young boy has come a long way. At five months old, he was photographed with Lionel Messi. At 12, he left his home up the Catalan coast to join the famed Barcelona’s La Masia academy. He has since secured La Liga titles with Barça and the 2024 European Championship with Spain.

His contract with Barça, signed in 2025, promises an income of up to €40 million yearly before tax, supplemented by endorsements with major brands like Adidas, American Eagle, Visa, Coca-Cola, and Beats by Dre.

Yamal often reflects on the challenges of his early years, especially for his parents and family friends from the mostly immigrant Rocafonda neighborhood in Mataro, a region in Catalonia with one of Spain’s highest poverty rates.

“My mum had me when she was 16,” Yamal stated in an interview with Spanish radio station Cadena SER. “My dad also had to seek out a means to sustain us, at times collecting items from the streets. This is real pressure, not what I face now.” His ‘304’ goal celebration pays homage to the last three digits of Rocafonda’s postcode, highlighting his roots and his parents’ sacrifices for his football dreams.

Despite the prominence of the French World Cup fixture, the identities of the benefactor friends, Lamine and Yamal, remain undisclosed. The footballer has never confirmed their identities, nor have Nasraoui or Ebana revealed the nature of their relationships or the specific help provided.

Reasons for the silence of these anonymous benefactors remain unknown. They may cherish their anonymity or prefer the player to receive his due focus. Regardless, if they tune in to Tuesday’s significant match, their act of kindness 19 years ago surely endures as a source of pride.
