A tragic shooting in southern Illinois has resulted in the arrest of two teenagers. The incident, which spanned multiple miles, claimed the lives of five family members. On Monday, officials confirmed these details but withheld the identities and genders of the 16- and 15-year-old suspects.
The authorities have not disclosed the relationship between the suspects or their connection to the victims. Brendan Kelly, the Illinois State Police Director, stated, “One of them is” related to the victims. Officials mentioned a “family connection” among the five deceased residents of East St. Louis.
Seven family members were shot at various locations, leading to five confirmed deaths. The victims are identified as Cherie L. May, 49; Devin D. May, 24; Patricia A. May, 74; Quentin L. Thompson, 21; and Shania W. Thompson, 25. Patricia May had a long career at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville as an office support associate from July 1986 until her retirement in December 2011.
The tragic events occurred at three separate locations within a few miles. A timeline of the shootings has not yet been provided. One fatality happened near Summit Avenue and North 39th Street, three were at the Samuel Gompers Homes, and another occurred at Jones Park, where two more people were injured.
Chris Allen, a spokesperson for the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office, highlighted that the Illinois Supreme Court rules restrict what can be disclosed, especially concerning juveniles involved in such cases.
