Democrat Troy Jackson Positions Himself for Maine Senate Race Amidst Controversy

In the wake of serious allegations against Graham Platner, Maine Democrat Troy Jackson is preparing a potential entry into the U.S. Senate race. Platner, facing calls to withdraw from his Senate campaign following rape allegations made public on Monday, has denied the accusations.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a prominent Democrat, has withdrawn support from Platner, urging him to end his campaign. According to Maine law, for Democrats to replace Platner on the November ballot, he must step aside by July 13. Should Platner withdraw, the state Democratic Party would have until July 27 to select a new candidate.

Jackson, who recently lost a gubernatorial primary, expressed interest in the Senate race by submitting candidacy paperwork to the Federal Election Commission. Although he has not yet decided, Jackson has condemned the allegations against Platner, highlighting his focus on a progressive platform.

Jackson and Platner have campaigned together, sharing a progressive agenda bolstered by support from Senator Bernie Sanders. However, following the allegations, Sanders’ organization, Our Revolution, has withdrawn its endorsement of Platner, now backing Jackson.

Joseph Geevarghese, Executive Director of Our Revolution, stressed the urgency, stating:

We have days, not weeks, to ensure a real progressive appears on the ballot.

Jackson’s connection to Sanders spans over a decade. He was a superdelegate who supported Sanders over Hillary Clinton in 2016 and served as Sanders’ political director in Maine, with both endorsing each other during various campaigns.

Throughout his career, Jackson has been a strong advocate for Maine’s working class. His Senate campaign highlights his long-standing commitment to issues like universal child care, Medicare for all, and affordable housing initiatives. His credibility stems from his work as a logger and his extensive legislative career in the Maine state government.

Jackson’s political success is notable, especially in northern Aroostook County, a traditionally Republican district. His focus remains on economic issues important to the working class, which he credits for his sustained electoral successes despite partisan divides.
