Dempsey’s Decision
Patrick Dempsey, famous for his role as Dr. Derek Shepherd on “Grey’s Anatomy,” announced he would not enter the Maine Senate race. Dempsey’s name had surfaced as a potential replacement for Graham Platner, the current Democratic nominee facing controversy.
Dempsey clarified his position in an op-ed for the Portland Press Herald. He stated, “Do I truly want to serve in Congress? After a lot of thought, the answer is no.” His decision emphasized his belief in contributing effectively through his established life and efforts.
Platner’s situation intensified with a new allegation of sexual assault, which he denies. This allegation prompted many of his congressional supporters to withdraw endorsements.
Potential Candidates
Before the recent allegations, a Tavern Research poll had considered Dempsey alongside former state Senate President Troy Jackson and Nirav Shah. Both Jackson and Shah had lost in the Democratic gubernatorial primary.
Jackson has filed paperwork to explore a run. Maine’s Secretary of State Shenna Bellows expressed her interest if Platner exits. Other potential candidates include Shah, state Rep. Valli Geiger, and state House Speaker Ryan Fecteau, although none have confirmed campaigns.
Community Involvement
Dempsey shared he was often asked about running for the Senate. He acknowledged the honor but chose to focus on existing community efforts, particularly through the Dempsey Center. The nonprofit supports cancer patients, inspired by his mother’s experience with ovarian cancer.
“The Dempsey Center shows what’s possible when differences are set aside,” Dempsey noted. He highlighted the nonpartisan support offered by the center, reflecting the America he wishes to see represented in the Senate.
If Platner withdraws before Monday, the Democratic Party must select a replacement by July 27.
