U.S. Navy Identifies Missing Helicopter Pilot in Arabian Sea

The U.S. Navy identified Cmdr. Gabriel Edwards as the missing sailor from a helicopter incident over the Arabian Sea. The incident occurred on July 1 when an MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopter, part of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 5, faced an emergency water landing. Of the four crew members, three were rescued, but Cmdr. Edwards was not found.

The search operation, covering more than 14,000 square miles, continued for over 102 hours before it was halted. The operation involved various naval and air force units, including aircraft carriers and guided-missile destroyers.

Cmdr. Edwards, from Oakland, Oregon, served in the Navy for two decades. He began his career after obtaining a physics degree and being commissioned through the Naval ROTC. In 2008, he earned his aviator “Wings of Gold” as a helicopter pilot. His service included assignments with HSC-22, HSC-84, and Naval Special Warfare Group 4, before taking command of HSC-5 last year.

In recognition of Cmdr. Edwards’ service, Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao announced his posthumous promotion to captain. “I am deeply grateful to every sailor and airman who took part in the search and who continue to support his family, friends, and shipmates,” said Cao.

Cmdr. Edwards leaves behind his wife, Rebecca, and two children. “Gabe has dedicated his life to serving his country with honor, courage, and commitment,” Rebecca noted, praising his leadership and devotion to family.

The military stated that the investigation into the cause of the emergency landing is ongoing. They reported no evidence of hostile action leading to the incident.

The three crew members rescued were returned safely to the USS George H.W. Bush.
