Qatar Accuses Iran of Tanker Strike in Strait of Hormuz

The Qatari government has held Iran responsible for an attack on a Qatari-flagged liquefied natural gas tanker near the Strait of Hormuz. The incident threatens the safety of vessels navigating this crucial maritime passage. Qatar’s spokesperson, Majed al-Ansari, urged Iran to stop actions that undermine regional security and threaten global energy supplies. He emphasized that Qatar holds Iran legally accountable for the incident and any related consequences.

The attack coincided with large gatherings at the funeral of Iran’s former Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Despite the accusations, Iran has not taken responsibility for the strike. According to the U.K. Maritime Trade Operations, the tanker was hit by a projectile, leading to a fire onboard while it was near the coast of Oman. The specific type of projectile used remains unidentified. Iranian media reports suggested that the Qatari vessel ignored prior warnings.

The Strait of Hormuz is vital for global oil and gas flows. Iran seeks control over this waterway, and strikes on ships have previously led to confrontations between Iranian and U.S. forces. These tensions have often accused each side of violating a fragile ceasefire.

In response to the incident, the U.S. Central Command launched a series of strikes against Iranian targets. They aim to penalize Iran for attacks on civilian-crewed commercial vessels in the strait, as emphasized by Centcom. Additionally, the U.S. State Department criticized China’s test launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile, describing it as concerning amid U.S. efforts to curb nuclear proliferation.

The British military confirmed that the commercial tanker was struck during its passage, sparking a fire on its portside. Fortunately, there were no casualties or environmental damages reported.

Besides these developments, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton criticized acting Director of National Intelligence Bill Pulte. She expressed concerns about appointees allegedly withholding information from him.

Various defense-related events are scheduled, including a conference by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and a panel discussion on U.S. Middle East policy by the Middle East Policy Council.
