Trump Administration Overhauls Gun Violence Prevention Strategies

The Trump administration has dramatically altered the federal government’s approach to gun violence prevention since returning to office. This shift has included cutting funding for programs and research aimed at reducing firearm injuries and deaths. Reports dedicated to preventing gun violence have disappeared from government websites.

The administration’s actions reflect a change in philosophy. The focus has moved away from a public-health-oriented approach to a law-and-order strategy. This involves bolstering police departments and seizing illegal weapons, while systematically reversing firearms regulations.

These changes also mirror President Trump’s longstanding political alliance with gun rights groups and his determination to dismantle policies previously enacted by former President Joseph R. Biden Jr. Upon taking office, Trump closed Biden’s White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, ordered a review of Biden’s firearms policies, and issued an executive order titled, “Protecting Second Amendment Rights.”

The Justice Department’s civil rights division has taken an unusual step by suing Virginia and California to overturn their state restrictions on gun ownership. This represents the division’s first affirmative litigation aimed at expanding gun rights, according to Joseph Blocher, a Second Amendment law expert at Duke University.

Despite Trump’s personal experiences with gun violence, including surviving three assassination attempts and the murder of his ally Charlie Kirk, the administration continues to cut prevention funding. The accused assassin in Kirk’s case faces a court hearing in Utah, and the suspect in an assassination attempt on Trump appeared in federal court in Washington recently.

Amy Solomon, who managed a violence prevention program at the Justice Department during the Biden administration, described the situation as deeply ironic. The Community Based Violence Intervention and Prevention Initiative she previously oversaw has seen a $150 million funding reduction, redirected toward law enforcement efforts.
