USMNT’s Campaign Ends with Loss to Belgium

The United States Men’s National Team experienced a heavy 4-1 defeat against Belgium in the Round of 16, concluding their journey in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Head coach Mauricio Pochettino expressed his disappointment with the team’s lackluster performance.

He acknowledged Belgium’s superiority, noting they outplayed the US team despite having only 43% possession. Belgium’s 15 shots and seven on target resulted in their four goals. The USMNT, in contrast, appeared disjointed and lacked the confidence seen in earlier matches. Their sole goal came in the first half from a Malik Tillman free kick, but they struggled to capitalize further.

After Tillman’s goal tied the match, Belgium quickly regained their lead. The USMNT had opportunities in the second half but failed to exploit them. One significant mistake occurred when Belgium launched a counterattack. Goalkeeper Matt Freese ventured far from the goal in an attempt to intercept the ball. Unfortunately, he lost his footing, allowing Hans Vanaken to score past defender Tim Ream, marking Belgium’s third goal at the 57th minute.

Compounding the USMNT’s difficulties, Christian Pulisic was injured in the second half. Despite continuing briefly, he was visibly impaired and was eventually subbed out. His absence added to the team’s challenges as he watched from the sidelines.

Belgium strengthened their advantage when Romelu Lukaku, introduced in the second half, scored a fourth goal three minutes into stoppage time. This sealed the 4-1 victory. Belgium now advances to face Spain, a top contender, in the quarterfinals.

The USMNT is the last of the three host countries to exit the 2030 World Cup. Although the tournament brought excitement to fans, US supporters hoped for a better showing than the one displayed in this match.
