Blatter Criticizes FIFA After Balogun’s Red Card Suspension Lifted

Former FIFA President Sepp Blatter recently expressed his disapproval of the soccer organization’s decision to suspend the red card ban for USA World Cup star Folarin Balogun ahead of a pivotal match against Belgium. Despite being twice banned following a corruption investigation, Blatter remains vocal during his suspension, which is set to last until 2027. Current FIFA President Gianni Infantino succeeded Blatter.

In a controversial move, Balogun’s red card, given for stepping on an opponent’s ankle during the U.S. match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, was overturned. This decision came after former U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly called Infantino urging a review. Blatter criticized the influence of politics in sports, writing on social media, “Red cards are not overturned by political phone calls. They are overturned by rules, evidence, and independent bodies.” He questioned FIFA’s independence, emphasizing that football should not become a political tool.

The Royal Belgian Football Association expressed its surprise, while coach Rudi Garcia sarcastically commented on the timing of FIFA’s ruling, suggesting it was akin to an April Fool’s joke. Garcia emphasized that their responsibility was to defend the integrity and ethics of football.
