Brazil faced a critical moment in their Round-of-16 match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Norway on July 5. A penalty in the 14th minute presented a chance for Brazil to take an early lead. Despite expectations that Vinícius Júnior would take the shot, Bruno Guimarães stepped up instead. Ørjan Nyland, Norway’s goalkeeper, successfully saved Guimarães’ attempt, making the decision even more controversial.
Brazil had multiple opportunities to score throughout the match, but Guimarães’ missed penalty became significant as Brazil lost to Norway 2-1. Nyland delivered an outstanding performance with crucial saves, leading some to speculate that Vinícius Júnior might have missed as well. However, that remains a question without an answer.
In the post-match press conference, Brazil’s manager Carlo Ancelotti addressed the decision not to let Vinícius Júnior take the penalty. He explained that statistics showed Raphinha as the top player, though he was unavailable due to a previous hamstring injury. Ancelotti mentioned that they opted for Guimarães based on the available players’ rankings.
Despite Raphinha’s recovery being sufficient for the match, he did not play against Norway. Neymar entered as a substitute in the 67th minute and scored a penalty during stoppage time, but it was insufficient to change the outcome.
Ancelotti acknowledged Norway’s strategy, noting their intent to maintain a slower game pace with high possession. Although Brazil aimed to have control, Erling Haaland changed the game’s course by scoring twice, in the 79th and 90th minutes, securing Norway’s spot in the quarterfinals for the first time. Norway will face either England or Mexico on July 11.
This defeat marks Brazil’s earliest World Cup exit since 1990. With five World Cup titles, Brazil stands as the most successful nation in tournament history, but their title drought now extends to 28 years.
