Folarin Balogun Cleared for World Cup Match Against Belgium

FIFA has cleared U.S. player Folarin Balogun to compete in the upcoming World Cup elimination game against Belgium. This decision follows the lifting of a one-game suspension initially imposed after a red card incident in a match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The decision was confirmed Sunday morning.

According to FIFA’s statement, the suspension is on hold for a probationary year. If Balogun commits a similar violation within this time, the suspension will be reinstated along with any penalties for the new infraction. Balogun has been essential to the U.S. team’s progress, leading with three goals in three matches, a feat not seen since 1930 for the American team.

The red card incident occurred during the second half against Bosnia. Balogun clashed with Bosnia’s Tarik Muharemovic, resulting in both players hitting the ground. Initially, no foul was called, but VAR prompted a review that led to Balogun receiving a red card. Despite this, Balogun maintained a respectful stance towards the decision.

“We accept the decision of the Disciplinary Committee and are pleased that Folarin Balogun is eligible to compete tomorrow,” stated U.S. Soccer.

The team learned of the decision to lift the suspension during a bus ride to training. U.S. Soccer emphasized focusing on the upcoming match with Belgium and appreciated the support of their fans.
