Holiday Weekend Violence: Incidents Across the U.S.

The extended holiday weekend was marred by violent incidents, leaving multiple victims in various states. In New York City, two officers from the New York Police Department (NYPD) were injured during separate confrontations. Additionally, a mass shooting at a Brooklyn family barbecue included four children among its victims.

Coney Island Barbecue Shooting

In Brooklyn’s Coney Island neighborhood, a family gathering turned tragic when eight people, including four children, were shot Saturday night. New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch reported at a news conference that an unidentified man dressed in black and wearing a ski mask approached the courtyard and fired multiple rounds before fleeing.

Investigators discovered 10 shell casings and a firearm with an extended magazine at the scene. Tisch stated there was no indication of any argument or altercation before the shooting. The incident is being examined for possible links to a gang-related homicide that occurred on the same block earlier in the week.

Among the victims, seven are expected to survive, while a 21-year-old woman remains in critical condition due to a chest wound. The injured children are aged 6, 7, 12, and 14. No arrests had been made by Sunday morning. Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed heartbreak over the events and emphasized that such violence has no place in the city.

Officers Injured in Crown Heights Confrontation

Hours later, in another Brooklyn incident, two NYPD officers were injured early Sunday in the Crown Heights neighborhood. Police reported the injuries occurred during a confrontation with an armed 18-year-old suspect.

Officers, part of a July 4th violence-reduction deployment, spotted the suspect carrying a firearm on surveillance footage shortly after 4 a.m. When the suspect approached an unmarked police vehicle, officers attempted to engage. The suspect fired at the vehicle, leading to retaliation from three officers, according to Tisch.

The suspect was not injured and was arrested after a brief foot chase, with a 9 mm handgun recovered. Detective Robert Carroll was struck in his ballistic vest and sustained bruising, while another officer suffered minor facial and shoulder injuries. Both officers are expected to make full recoveries.

Shootings in South Carolina, Florida, and Michigan

Similar violent incidents occurred at holiday gatherings in other states:

• Hilton Head, South Carolina: Seven people suffered non-life-threatening injuries on Saturday night near Coligny Beach. Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office stated the shooting resulted from a physical altercation between two groups in a public beach access area around 8:20 p.m. Six individuals were detained for questioning, and multiple firearms were recovered. The investigation is ongoing.
• Pensacola, Florida: In the city’s downtown area early Sunday, one person was killed, and five others were injured. Pensacola police reported the shooting occurred shortly before 1:30 a.m. Several arrests were made at the scene, with an ongoing investigation.
• Mount Clemens, Michigan: A block party turned violent, resulting in injuries to five people, including two minors, late Saturday. Macomb County sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of gunfire near the intersection of Court and Clemens streets at approximately 11:10 p.m. All five victims were hospitalized, and authorities continue to investigate.
