USMNT’s Balogun Suspended for Match Against Belgium

The United States Men’s National Team is navigating challenges ahead of their match against Belgium in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Following a 2-0 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina, the team faces Belgium on Monday night without their striker, Folarin Balogun.

Balogun received a red card in the 64th minute during the game against Bosnia and Herzegovina after a VAR review conducted by referee Rafael Claus. The review concluded that Balogun stepped on the ankle of defender Tarik Muharemović. This decision has left Balogun ineligible to play in the crucial game against Belgium.

FIFA had the discretion to impose a suspension lasting more than one match, but opted to suspend Balogun for only the upcoming match. According to Doug McIntyre of Fox Sports, should the USMNT advance to the quarterfinals, Balogun will be able to participate. The potential matchup would be against either Spain or Portugal.

“Per USMNT spokesperson, FIFA has confirmed that Folarin Balogun is suspended for one game,” McIntyre reported.

This decision provides some reassurance for the USMNT, needing Balogun’s contributions in future matches. Balogun has already scored three goals in the 2026 World Cup, proving his importance to the team’s offensive strategy.

Despite the relief, controversy surrounds the decision to award the red card. Initially, Claus did not issue even a yellow card for the foul before the VAR review led to the red card decision. As a result, the USMNT was forced to complete the match with just 10 players.

USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino expressed disagreement with the decision, describing Balogun’s actions as a “normal action” common in soccer.

The absence of their leading scorer is a setback as they prepare to face Belgium. Belgium recently beat the U.S. 5-2 in a friendly on March 28 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
