Enhanced Security Measures in Mexico City for World Cup Match

Mexico City will increase security and restrict access at key locations during the Mexico-England World Cup match. This decision follows the unfortunate deaths of four individuals during celebrations after Mexico’s victory over Ecuador.

Security Measures Announced

Mayor Clara Brugada outlined the new security steps after the tragic events where three fans died of asphyxiation and cardiac arrest. The city aims to safeguard public spaces during the exciting progress of the Mexican team. Authorities have reassured the public about safety through extensive precautions.

Distinctive Features of the Plan

The Monument to Independence, also known as the “Angel,” and the Zócalo, will have free access, but with restricted capacity. Only 25,000 fans can gather at the Angel before being redirected to other areas with large screens.

Security provisions at Paseo de la Reforma will involve 6,000 officers, double the previous deployment. Around the Estadio Azteca, 7,500 officers will secure the area, with 3,300 in the Zócalo. A controlled security perimeter will maintain order near the Angel.

The city will implement strategic Metro and Metrobus closures. Street vendors and delivery drivers will face access restrictions. Alcohol sales will cease in the city center from the early hours of July 5, with consumption allowed only in specific locations.

England’s Arrival

England’s team arrived safely at their hotel under heightened security. Policing efforts included the Army, National Guard, and local police. Unlike the previous situation with Ecuador’s team, the arrival was quiet, with no major fan gatherings.
