A severe heat wave, with temperatures surpassing 100 degrees, is affecting the Northeast, prompting the cancellation of numerous events planned for the Fourth of July and America’s 250th anniversary.
From Philadelphia to New York, organizers have canceled, postponed, or relocated dozens of parades, lectures, and fireworks indoors as they prioritize public safety amid extremely hazardous conditions.
Jayne Musonye, Interim Municipal Administrator of Norristown, Pennsylvania, expressed regret over the cancellation of the parade, stating, “The parade is one of our community’s most beloved traditions, and we share in the disappointment of its cancellation, especially as we celebrate America’s 250th birthday.” She emphasized the need to prioritize safety amid the forecasted dangerous heat.
Fireworks in Colorado have also been canceled in at least eight cities due to concerns that they could ignite severe fires.

As of Thursday morning, these are the events affected by the extreme heat in the Northeast:
Delaware
- Bethany Beach: Independence Day parade on July 3 is canceled.
New Jersey
- Haddon Township: Independence Day Parade on July 4 is canceled.
- Franklin Township: Independence Day celebration and fireworks postponed from July 2 to July 10.
- Monmouth County: the MonmouthNJ 250 concert in Freehold postponed from July 3 to July 17.
- Howell Township: Independence Day celebration postponed.
New York
- Port Jervis: Food-truck portion of the Food Truck and Fireworks Festival on July 2 canceled, fireworks remain scheduled.
- Town of Wallkill: Fireworks at the Town of Wallkill Golf Course on July 2 canceled, postponement under consideration.
- Town of Newburgh: Community Day festivities canceled, set to be rescheduled.
Pennsylvania
- West York Borough: America250 celebration at Freedom Park on July 3 canceled, possible rescheduling in August.
- Lower Windsor Township: America’s 250th Anniversary celebration postponed to July 8.
- Philadelphia: All-American Block Party on July 2 canceled.
- Norristown: July 4 parade canceled.
Southern Colorado
Fireworks planned for July 4 have been canceled in the following areas:

Pennsylvania
- Philadelphia: Red, White & Rosé Picnic on July 2 rescheduled to start at 6 p.m.
- Philadelphia: Independence Illumination Drone Show on July 2 pushed back to 10 p.m.
- Philadelphia: Semiquincentennial Parade on July 3 shortened from 2.5 miles to about 1 mile.
- Philadelphia: National Constitution Center ceremony awarding Pope Leo Liberty Medal moved indoors, acceptance speech delivered virtually from the Vatican.
- Philadelphia: FIFA Fan Festival reduced operating hours and canceled some scheduled match screenings.
- Gettysburg National Military Park: All outdoor anniversary activities between July 1 and July 3 moved indoors.
