Columbus Faces Criticism for Raising Somali Flag

The city of Columbus, Ohio, which is home to one of the largest Somali communities in the U.S., has faced significant criticism on social media. This backlash emerged after a post celebrating the raising of the Somali flag. The Columbus Recreation and Parks Department marked the event with a message on X: “Happy Somali Independence Day! As we celebrate the unification of the Trust Territory of Somaliland and the State of Somaliland into the Somali Republic in 1960, City Hall will be raising the flag of Somalia.”

This gesture quickly caught the attention of conservative voices on social media. Many questioned Columbus’ strong celebration of Somali independence, especially with the impending 250th anniversary of American independence. Stephen Miller, White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy, raised concerns by commenting, “Columbus, Ohio raising the flag of Somalia for America 250.”

Further criticism came from journalist Mark Hemingway, who stated, “No American government building should ever be raising another country’s flag.” Mehek Cooke, an attorney and political commentator, expressed disdain, noting the perceived neglect of American patriotism and describing the action as “anti-Americanism.”

Brigitte Gabriel from ACT for America argued that flying the Somali flag signifies “cultural surrender” and called for its removal. Comments from other figures, such as Daily Wire’s Luke Rosiak and Federalist reporter Brianna Lyman, echoed similar sentiments, questioning the prioritization of this celebration over American unity.

Ohio Republican State Rep. Brian Stewart suggested the actions promoted a lack of cultural assimilation. Despite the controversy, the city of Columbus has not publicly responded to the criticism yet.
