A study by the Center for Strategic and International Studies released Wednesday reports over two million Russian and Ukrainian troops have been killed or wounded since February 2022. This marks a grim milestone in the continuing war.
Russia has suffered heavier losses, with 1.4 million troops killed or injured. Significantly, 450,000 Russian soldiers have died, exceeding four times the total U.S. military fatalities since World War II.
Ukrainian forces report between 525,000 to 625,000 casualties, with 125,000 to 150,000 deaths. These figures were estimated using information from American and British government sources, as official numbers remain undisclosed due to Russia’s likely underreporting and Ukraine’s confidentiality practices.
The study paints a stark picture of the conflict’s escalation. Russian advances have slowed significantly, with troops sometimes moving less than 165 feet a day. Meanwhile, Ukraine made gains in February for the first time since 2023, especially in the southern offensive.
