DSA-Backed Candidate Defeats Incumbent in Colorado Primary

Rep. Diana DeGette, a long-standing member of Congress from Colorado, lost her seat in a Democratic primary to Melat Kiros. Kiros, supported by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), is a 29-year-old socialist who secured a noteworthy win for the socialist movement. The Associated Press reports this as a significant victory, highlighting the DSA’s growing influence.

The DSA emphasized its success by referring to previous victories in New York City primaries. They noted their expanding momentum, suggesting a shift in political dynamics.

If successful in November, Kiros, originally from Ethiopia, may join the group known as the Squad. This group represents the far-left socialists in the House of Representatives. Endorsements from figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez boosted Kiros’ campaign.

DeGette, a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, aimed for a 16th House term. She highlighted her attempts to introduce Medicare-for-All as a key policy initiative. Despite shared views on several issues, Kiros and DeGette diverged on Israel and antisemitism topics.

Kiros, a student and lawyer, faced controversy over past remarks concerning Israel and alleged antisemitism. She criticized DeGette’s acceptance of corporate donations and spotlighted her own stance on pro-Palestinian protests.

A notable aspect of Kiros’ campaign involved a past incident where she was fired from a New York law firm. She had supported student protesters’ calls regarding Israel and, in later statements, expressed controversial views on terrorism and foreign policy. DeGette responded harshly, finding Kiros’ comments unsettling.

The primary also featured Wanda James, another candidate, though she did not pose a significant challenge. Her presence, however, might have influenced the outcome of the primary.
