Exploring the Best Methods to Cook Hot Dogs

1 month ago 0

Preparing a hot dog may seem simple, yet finding the best way to cook this summertime favorite can be challenging. Chef Kenji López-Alt, renowned James Beard Award winner and cookbook author, provides some valuable insights. He suggests starting at the supermarket by selecting hot dogs with natural casing. These are made from lamb skins and give hot dogs a distinct curve, unlike those packaged flat. This casing contributes to the signature ‘snap’ of a well-cooked hot dog.

Quick Methods for Immediate Satisfaction

According to López-Alt, achieving the best flavor with hot dogs requires patience. He recommends a ‘low and slow’ cooking approach for sausages. However, Ayesha Rascoe shares her preference for a ‘hot and fast’ method, even if it results in burnt edges. While microwaving is quick, it often results in split skin and shriveled ends. López-Alt acknowledges this method is practical, especially for parents under time constraints. An air fryer emerged as a better alternative in testing, delivering a crispy skin and enhanced flavor in nearly the same time frame.

The air fryer’s convection fan helps eliminate excess moisture, which improves texture. The only drawback is that hot dogs can become misshapen. To address this, some chefs recommend cutting the skin for additional surface area, which worked for Ballpark beef franks. However, López-Alt advises against this hack for natural casing hot dogs.

Slow Cooking for Deep Flavors

Cooking hot dogs slowly is akin to gas station methods, involving low heat over extended periods. López-Alt shared a recipe involving cocktail weenies, combined with ketchup, brown sugar, and bourbon in a slow cooker. Despite their less appealing color, the flavor is rich and deep. After trying hot dogs in a slow cooker without water for two hours, Rascoe found the initial appearance unappealing, but she was won over by the taste. This method keeps hot dogs ready throughout a party and can accommodate a large quantity for extended periods.

The Classic Grill Approach

Using a hot grill is a tried-and-true method for cooking hot dogs. Testing involved a little Weber grill on a balcony. The hot dogs were initially warmed away from the coals and then grilled directly over them to achieve a crisp texture and grill marks. The result was a desirable color and reduced saltiness according to Rascoe, who prefers a variety of toppings. López-Alt, on the other hand, enjoys sauerkraut and spicy mustard. Regional toppings also spark interest, such as Seattle’s cream cheese, jalapenos, and grilled onions, which López-Alt finds intriguing when combined properly.

Whether you choose relish, ketchup, or cream cheese, and regardless of the cooking method—air fryer, grill, or slow cooker—ensuring your holiday meal is enjoyable and flavorful is most important.
