New Highmark Stadium Opens Without O.J. Simpson Tribute

The Buffalo Bills have unveiled their new Highmark Stadium, which cost $2.1 billion and took three years to construct. This facility honors the team’s past with a Wall of Fame featuring celebrated team legends. However, O.J. Simpson, once a prominent player for the Bills, is not included, as reported by NBC affiliate WGRZ.

“We have made an organizational decision that he is not a fit to display inside our new stadium and family circle,” stated Pete Guelli, president of the team’s business operations.

Simpson was the No.1 draft pick in 1969 and spent nine seasons with the Bills. During his career, he became the first NFL player to rush for over 2,000 yards in a single season, making him one of the top running backs of his era before retiring and moving into broadcasting.

Simpson’s Controversial History

Despite his football achievements, Simpson’s reputation was marred by later events. In the summer of 1994, his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman were found murdered in Los Angeles. Evidence, including a trail of blood, implicated Simpson, leading to a police pursuit through Southern California.

The subsequent criminal trial in 1995, dubbed the “Trial of the Century,” saw Simpson acquitted of murder charges but held liable for the deaths in a civil suit later on. The trial divided public opinion, with some arguing racial bias in the police department while others claimed Simpson’s wealth influenced the outcome.

In 2008, Simpson faced another legal battle when convicted of armed robbery. He served the minimum of a nine to 33-year sentence before release. Simpson’s personal and legal troubles permanently altered his public image and legacy within the football community.

Simpson passed away at the age of 76 due to cancer.
