Caitlin Clark Faces Controversy in Game Against Mercury

Indiana Fever’s star player, Caitlin Clark, returned to action on Wednesday night in Indianapolis. However, controversy arose during the game against the Phoenix Mercury.

Clark started strong but faced a physical challenge as she drove towards the basket. She lost her footing in the paint while attempting to maintain possession. Three Mercury players successfully stripped the ball from her. Alyssa Thomas then made contact with Clark, pushing her and stepping over her while she was down. This incident occurred as the ball rolled away from their vicinity.

The referees did not call a foul, although a referee was visible close to the action. This decision sparked significant criticism on social media. Dave Portnoy, founder of Barstool Sports, tweeted his frustration over the lack of a call.

A separate user expressed concern over Thomas’s actions, describing them as excessive. The complaint described the lack of a foul as problematic, generating debate among spectators and fans.

In a related incident, the WNBA is currently reviewing a technical foul Clark received in a previous game against the Mercury. The technical was for “clapping and instigating” during a heated exchange. Four additional players received technical fouls during the incident: Sophie Cunningham, Myisha Hines-Allen from the Fever, and Alyssa Thomas and DeWanna Bonner from the Mercury. Thomas and Hines-Allen received second technical fouls and were subsequently ejected.

Clark eventually had to leave the game in the third quarter due to a back injury. She concluded with a performance of 19 points and eight assists.
