Backlash to Same-Sex Marriage: Exploring Its Strength and Reasons

The U.S. Supreme Court affirmed same-sex marriage as a national right in 2015, a landmark move that reshaped the American legal and cultural landscape.

Representative Andy Ogles, a Republican from Tennessee, prompted controversy in early June. He posted a controversial message on X, stating that “Homosexuality has no place in America. Happy Nuclear Family Month.” This message stirred significant backlash, including condemnation from his party members like House Speaker Mike Johnson. Ogles later deleted the post, attributing it to a staffer, and described it as “stupid” and “hurtful.”

Division Within the Republican Party

This incident highlights the ongoing divisions among Republicans regarding same-sex marriage. While the landmark Supreme Court decision, Obergefell v. Hodges, celebrates its 11th anniversary, many establishment Republicans continue to support it. However, Christian conservatives, a key part of former President Trump’s coalition, are actively challenging it, often linking the issue with debates on transgender rights.

Ross Hemminger, president of the Log Cabin Republicans, remarked, “Ten years ago, no one would have tweeted anything like that. We are now revisiting arguments we thought were settled.”

Shift in Public Opinion

Support for gay marriage is experiencing a decline. A Gallup poll conducted earlier this month revealed that Republican support has decreased to 37 percent, marking an 18 percentage point drop from its peak in 2022. Support among independents has diminished as well.

Legislative Efforts and Political Resolutions

A few Republican legislators are advocating for resolutions against gay marriage. Since 2025, various state bills and resolutions have been introduced, urging the Supreme Court to overturn Obergefell or proposing marriage categories confined to heterosexual couples. According to Lambda Legal, most of these initiatives did not survive committee scrutiny.
