North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has announced plans to significantly expand the country’s naval forces over the next five years. He proposed that the regime should build two large warships annually, similar in size to the 5,000-ton Choe Hyon-class vessel. This call was made during the commissioning ceremony of a new destroyer, as reported by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
Kim was present to celebrate the deployment of this new multipurpose destroyer at Nampho port. In earlier months, Kim witnessed successful launches of two cruise missiles and three anti-ship missiles from the vessel. The destroyer has completed military operational tests successfully over the past 14 months, according to KCNA.
“Building a modernized naval base has emerged as a desperate and essential task,” Kim stated, emphasizing the nation’s focus on strengthening its naval capabilities.
The Choe Hyon destroyer is seen as a crucial step in advancing North Korea’s military operational reach and preemptive strike capacities. Kim mentioned that the navy’s nuclearization is progressing, reinforcing the country’s nuclear deterrence.
Kim Jong Un is focused on enhancing a naval force long considered one of North Korea’s weaker military branches. KCNA also highlighted plans for other strategic naval developments. These include deploying another 5,000-ton destroyer, the Kang Kon, and larger 10,000-ton strategic warships. The Kang Kon, initially revealed in May last year, suffered damage during its first launch at Chongjin port but was relaunched after repairs.
During a recent meeting with the Workers’ Party’s Central Committee, Kim discussed changes to the navy’s status, role, and scope of operations. However, he did not provide specific details about these changes.
Kim Jong Un is reportedly assessing plans to establish new naval bases. These efforts aim to transform North Korea’s naval capabilities significantly, pushing the navy to new strategic heights. He believes these additions will make the navy “something incredible beyond imagination.”
