Podcast hosts Yemisi Egbewole and Rich Zeoli have dissected the impact of the Iran deal on the upcoming midterm elections. Rich Zeoli argues that Republicans gain an advantage through reduced gas and oil prices. However, Yemisi Egbewole expresses worry regarding potential increases in food prices and the internal challenges within the Democratic party. Former President Trump’s social media post highlights the market’s favorable response to the news.
In recent political developments, Michael DeCillis, a former New York Police Department officer, claimed victory in a Democratic primary, securing his party’s nomination to contest against incumbent Representative Nicole Malliotakis, R-N.Y. This race is among several crucial matchups that could shift the power balance in the House of Representatives. Currently, Republicans maintain a narrow majority. Although Democrats have targeted New York Republicans in attempts to gain seats, DeCillis encounters significant obstacles as the November elections approach.
DeCillis emphasizes the importance of congressional resistance to former President Donald Trump. He aims to prevent executive overreach. According to his campaign website, DeCillis believes that democracy is at risk and commits to safeguarding rights while ensuring government accountability beyond serving affluent interests.
Throughout his campaign, DeCillis highlights his varied public service background and community connections in New York. He is a fourth-generation Staten Islander and a third-generation union member. In a campaign video, DeCillis outlined his experience: “I’ve worked in EMS as a paramedic for over a decade, was a 9/11 first responder, helping firefighters at Ground Zero, I’ve walked the streets of New York City as a police officer and taught as a special education teacher in our public schools.”
While DeCillis has previously run for the seat twice, in both 2018 and 2022, he withdrew before the general election. Now, in his third attempt, he critiques Malliotakis as a supporter of MAGA politics, which he argues is disconnected from the state’s diverse voter base. DeCillis calls Malliotakis a “MAGA loyalist,” stating in a social media post that “President Trump and Republicans like Nicole Malliotakis are destroying democracy at home and diplomacy and security abroad.”
Representative Nicole Malliotakis, R-N.Y., secured her last re-election in 2024, gaining 63.8% over Democratic contender Andrea Morse, an attorney and small-business owner. Having succeeded in the primary, DeCillis now faces Malliotakis in the upcoming general election scheduled for November 3.
