The softball game between two youth teams on Father’s Day weekend in 2026 will not be easily forgotten. Emotions ran high during the USSSA Wood Grill Buffet/Everett Classic in Benton, Arkansas.
It started with a controversial foul ball call by the first base umpire. The Arkansas Pride 12 (13U) led 7-2 against the Tulsa Elite NEA (14U). A Pride batter hit a ball down the first base line. The first base umpire immediately called it foul.
The Pride coach disagreed with the decision. He approached the home plate umpire. A heated exchange ensued with the first base umpire. They soon found themselves face-to-face and engaged in a shoving match.
Afterward, the Tulsa Elite coaching staff emphasized their team’s restraint. According to a statement on Facebook, their players and most parents stayed on the sidelines. One parent intervened to help de-escalate the situation.
The coaching staff remarked, “Our team was immediately sent to the dugout and remained there until everything was resolved… The video speaks for itself.”
Nationwide, disruptive behavior at baseball and softball games has increased. The number of umpires is declining. A 2023 survey revealed that 69% of officials felt sportsmanship was deteriorating. 1 in 8 reported being assaulted during or after a game.
Concerns about safety led to the forfeit decision. The Tulsa Elite’s coach prioritized player well-being, opting to withdraw from the game when their parents were asked to leave.
Efforts to reach the USSSA Arkansas state director for comments have been unsuccessful.
