San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch previously indicated Brandon Aiyuk’s tenure with the team is likely over. George Kittle appears content with this development. The discord between Aiyuk and the 49ers has been ongoing for nearly a year. It began when the team retracted the remaining guaranteed money from his contract extension. This decision followed Aiyuk’s absence from rehabilitation sessions for knee injuries sustained in 2024. These injuries included a torn ACL, MCL, and meniscus, and he has yet to return to play.
The 49ers are actively seeking a trade partner for Aiyuk, but have yet to finalize any deals. Meanwhile, Kittle has extended well-wishes to any team that acquires him.
“I used to make it a habit of mine to go out early in the morning before meetings to watch him train because he’d always be out there early, and I watched him run over 22 miles an hour and watched him stop on a dime. He’s still got it, but that was eight months ago, so I don’t really know. You guys have fun with that, I guess,” Kittle shared on the ‘Pardon My Take’ podcast.
Speculation abounds that Aiyuk may join the Washington Commanders. In a recent Instagram video, Aiyuk was vocal in his support for them, exclaiming, “Go Commanders!” He has also expressed frustration with the 49ers, labeling the team as “dumb” for extending his contract yet choosing not to release him, fearing his potential success elsewhere in the league.
The 49ers placed Aiyuk on the reserve/left team list last December after he discontinued attendance at the team facility. Prior to his injury in 2024, Aiyuk registered 24 catches for 374 yards. His performance in 2023 included 1,342 yards on 75 receptions and seven touchdowns, playing a crucial role in the team’s Super Bowl run.
