Smoke Cloud Persists Over Los Angeles Following Warehouse Fire

2 days ago 0

Since Wednesday, a dense smoke has enveloped sections of Los Angeles, resulting from a persistent fire in the Boyle Heights area. The fire began on the roof of a massive cold-food storage facility measuring 500,000 square feet located on South Los Palos Street.

Prompted by the fire, shelter-in-place orders were issued, and a state of emergency was declared over the weekend. The fire continues to emit smoke, affecting air quality throughout the region. As a result, the South Coast Air Quality Management District extended its particle pollution advisory into Monday morning.

The agency’s sensors indicated that air particulates had reached “very unhealthy” levels, particularly affecting central Los Angeles County, San Gabriel Valley, East San Fernando Valley, and Northwest San Bernardino Valley.

Residents were advised to limit exposure by staying indoors, keeping windows and doors closed, and using air conditioning or air purifying units if available.

Ysabel Jurado, representing Boyle Heights, expressed the urgency of addressing the challenges faced by residents. She emphasized the need for comprehensive emergency response, air monitoring, hazardous debris removal, and public health measures.

On Saturday, Governor Gavin Newsom of California issued a state of emergency for Los Angeles County and pledged support for firefighters and emergency personnel. Mayor Karen Bass also declared a localized emergency to ensure the city received necessary resources and support.

The affected warehouse is operated by Lineage, a cold storage and logistics firm that promised a $2 million donation to assist the impacted community. Lineage clarified that it leases the roof to a solar company and suspects the fire originated during maintenance activity by subcontractors.

The Los Angeles Fire Department reported progress in battling the blaze. Crews removed sections of the exterior wall to improve access to fire areas, enhancing the effectiveness of water application. Although smoke levels showed improvement, firefighters remained cautious of intermittent smoke increases as concealed spaces were opened.

Social media revealed images of Dodger Stadium shrouded in smoke, prompting concerns about air quality during events. Despite the haze, events proceeded once conditions improved.
