As the angler poses proudly with his catch near the boat, a sea lion suddenly appears, heading straight for the tuna. Despite the fisherman’s attempts to hold the tuna, the determined sea lion eventually forces him to relinquish it.
The California sea lion bites down on the fish, leaving the fisherman stumbling backwards in disbelief as the tuna vanishes into the sea.
For viewers, the scene is amusing from the comfort of their homes. For the fisherman, however, investing hours to reel in a beautiful tuna only to have a sea lion seize the prize is less entertaining.
Animal experts identify this behavior as “depredation,” where marine mammals like sea lions take fish from anglers, fishing lines, nets, and boats. Being intelligent creatures, sea lions frequently associate fishing activities with easy meals.
In some regions, sea lions have become adept at such thefts, with anglers often anticipating their presence at fishing spots. The video suggests this isn’t the sea lion’s first tuna theft, demonstrating practiced confidence.
