Recognition for Child Safety Advocacy
Marissa Adcock of Franciscan Health’s Trauma Services Department has been acknowledged for her contributions to child safety. As an Injury Prevention Coordinator, Adcock was awarded the Child Safety Advocacy Award at the Safe Kids Indiana Automotive Safety Program. Adcock serves as a co-leader for Safe Kids Northwest Indiana and manages child safety seat inspections and training events across Northern Indiana. Her efforts have expanded Franciscan Health’s child seat safety stations to several counties, including Starke/Pulaski, LaPorte, Porter, and Elkhart. Adcock also supports training events in Michigan City and Hammond.
New United Way Grant Program Launched
United Way Northwest Indiana has introduced the 2026 Community Impact Grant Program. This initiative aims to enhance the well-being of working families in Lake, Porter, Jasper, Newton, and Starke counties. Grant amounts will range from $5,000 to $150,000, focusing on financial stability, youth opportunities, healthy communities, and community resilience. Special attention will be given to youth and financial security. Eligible applicants are 501(c)(3) organizations within the service area. Applications are open until July 31, with funding decisions by September 30 and distribution starting in October.
Lake County Fair’s Maintenance Crew Recruitment
The Lake County Fair is seeking individuals for its maintenance crew. Roles begin mid-July and continue through the fair dates of August 7-16. Responsibilities include setup, teardown, and operational duties. Interested applicants can find application details at the fair’s official website. Established in 1852, the fair has become one of Indiana’s largest.
Free Safe Kids Day in LaPorte
On July 10, families can enjoy Safe Kids Day at the LaPorte County Family Resource Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event features various activities, educational booths, a free meal, live DJ music, safety demonstrations, door prizes, and the opportunity to meet local heroes. Partnering organizations include Safe Kids Northwest Indiana, Franciscan Health Crown Point and Trauma Services, and Geminus Regional Care Group.
Certificates for Election Office Employees
Kelley DePirro and Lori O’Dea from the Lake County Board of Elections and Registration have completed Indiana’s Certificate in Election Administration, Technology, and Security program. This program aims to enhance election integrity and leadership skills. DePirro’s “Proactive Absentee Ballot Error Prevention Initiative” received national recognition in the 2025 Clearinghouse Awards.
