Fernando Mendoza Prepares for NFL Debut with Las Vegas Raiders

3 days ago 0

Fernando Mendoza is preparing for his debut season in the NFL with the Las Vegas Raiders. Selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 draft, Mendoza’s journey follows an undefeated season with the Indiana Hoosiers, highlighted by a national championship win in 2025. His accolades also include the prestigious Heisman Trophy, yet he acknowledges there is much more to learn in the professional league.

With guidance from knowledgeable figures, Mendoza’s transition into the NFL is supported. Raiders offensive coordinator Andrew Janocko works with quarterbacks Mendoza and Kirk Cousins during minicamp at the Intermountain Health Performance Center in Henderson, Nev. Additionally, Mendoza has received valuable insights from Raiders minority owner and former quarterback Tom Brady.

Mendoza shared, “What he said as a quarterback is you need to be the most everything. You need to be the most competitive. You need to be the most leader. You have to have the most leadership.”

Brady emphasized the importance of mental and physical toughness, explaining that leadership requires earning respect through example. This advice aims to strengthen Mendoza’s approach as he settles into his role.

Kirk Cousins offers another veteran presence, though he views his relationship with Mendoza differently. According to Cousins, “I think to say I’m mentoring them is a bit of a reach, probably more of a narrative than it is the truth. They’re pretty good players and pretty experienced, and I’m learning a lot from them too and asking questions.”

The question of who will start in Week 1 remains. Cousins, currently on a two-year, $12.6 million contract with the Raiders, continues to demonstrate his capabilities. When the time comes, the team will have to decide who fits best for the starting role.

Mendoza’s arrival is watched with anticipation, as he adapts and strives to build upon his collegiate success in the NFL.
