In a bold move at Milan Fashion Week, Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons unveiled a new collection inspired by streetwear but crafted in luxurious materials. Seeking to appeal to both everyday wearers and fashion aficionados, the designers presented menswear characterized by jeans-inspired basics reimagined in leather and technical fabrics.
The New Prada Uniform
The collection for the upcoming spring and summer seasons features slim, cropped jackets and five-pocket trousers. These pieces are complemented by timeless blazers and leather blousons. Simons noted the parallels to a classic Italian item, “Sometimes you need a good pasta pomodoro,” he shared, underscoring the collection’s essence.
Interestingly, while the collection is denim-inspired, neither Prada nor Simons are frequent denim wearers. This twist led to the creation of the new Prada uniform using unexpected materials. Most outfits were crafted in soft leather shades like antique white, gray, burgundy, and turquoise, debuted under rock guitar riffs. Some garments appeared in light white technical fabric, ideal for Europe’s recent hot spells, while only a few designs utilized actual denim.
Distinctive Design Elements
Cropped shirts and knit vests showcased geometric patterns, paired with contrasting silk scarves around the waist. Bags in the collection were colorful pouches worn on the waist, attached to thick belts. Pointy shoes with multiple Velcro straps finalized the ensembles.
Focus on Real-World Wear
Prada emphasized designing for universality and avoiding unnecessary embellishments often seen on runways. Simons remarked on the desire to reconnect with genuine street fashion influences, stating some of fashion’s most impactful ideas originate “from the street.” The collection maintained clean lines, featuring a vertical, simple silhouette.
The presentation’s simplicity was mirrored in its venue—a minimalistic showroom with transparent benches allowing everyone a prime view. Notable attendees included NBA superstar Anthony Edwards, singer and actor Troye Sivan, K-pop group ENHYPEN, and actor Louis Partridge. Despite the early summer heat, fans gathered to catch a glimpse of their favorite celebrities.
