The Impact of Pink Boots on World Cup Soccer

3 days ago 0

Gio Reyna launched the World Cup for the United States with an iconic goal. Vinícius Junior dazzled in Brazil’s opener, and Kylian Mbappé scored twice to become France’s career goals leader. Harry Kane scored two more to tie England’s record, as he and his teammates aim to bring the trophy home. What do these players have in common? Pink boots.

In the World Cup hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, pink stands out on the soccer field. Many players wear pink boots that are noticeable against the green grass. Several shoe companies designed these boots for this tournament, focusing on performance and visibility.

Performance and Visibility

Nike’s director of global footwear, Odinga Nimako, explained that athletes associate pink with confidence, which helps them stand out. The 1998 World Cup marked a shift from traditional black and white boots, featuring silver, yellow, and blue ones. Now, brands like Nike, Adidas, Puma, Skechers, and New Balance have launched pink boots.

Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Junior, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Erling Haaland sport Nike. Gio Reyna, Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, Jonathan David, Lamine Yamal, and Ousmane Dembélé wear Adidas. Neymar Jr., playing for Brazil, and Weston McKennie of the U.S. choose Puma. Timothy Weah wears New Balance, while Kane and Anthony Elanga opt for Skechers.

Skechers’ Inspiration

Skechers director Alex Bardini noted the colorway reflects an L.A. sunset: pinks and purples melting into white with touches of orange.

From Los Angeles to Vancouver and beyond, before the World Cup ends, pink is a standout color. When Sweden scored five against Tunisia in Monterrey, three goals came from players in pink boots, including Yasin Ayari and Mattias Svanberg.

Mindset and Performance

Pink does not inherently enhance performance, but shoe companies believe it affects mindset. Bardini emphasized that comfort and performance are core to Skechers’ design, and Nimako highlighted Nike’s focus on aerodynamics.

“The perception of speed and fit contributes to performance,” Nimako explained. “When players feel the boots are lightweight and well-engineered, everything works together.”
