Mona Khalil dedicated over 25 years to protecting endangered sea turtles that laid eggs on a beach near her guesthouse in Lebanon. Each summer, these turtles returned to the shores near Tyre, an area Khalil worked diligently to safeguard from various threats.
Khalil’s commitment extended beyond just conserving turtles. She managed to unite differing groups around the cause, gaining respect among conservationists. Despite the recurrent conflicts in southern Lebanon, she held firm to her dedication, ensuring a safe path for hatchlings to reach the Mediterranean Sea.
Tragically, during recent conflicts between Israel and Hezbollah, Khalil suffered injuries from an Israeli airstrike on June 4. She passed away from these injuries at the American University of Beirut Medical Center, according to her close associate, Fadia Jomaa.
Khalil’s sister, Amal, described her as both tough and kind. Amal expressed deep frustration over her sister’s loss and the ongoing violence.
The recent hostilities between the Israeli forces and Hezbollah have claimed over 4,000 lives, threatening a delicate peace brokered by the United States and Iran. Khalil’s death highlights the human toll of this conflict.
Born in Nigeria to Lebanese parents, Mona Khalil later moved to the Netherlands. There, she spent over a decade, at one point working as a porcelain restorer, before returning to Lebanon to embark on her conservation mission.
