President Donald Trump introduced the new Air Force One jet on Friday. This aircraft, controversially provided by the Qatari government, will be showcased during a ceremonial flyover in Washington on July 4. The event marks the 250th anniversary of the United States.
Trump made the announcement at Joint Base Andrews near Washington. He appeared on the tarmac, exiting the jet and making his way down the aircraft steps.
The Boeing 747 features a new color scheme of red, white, and dark blue. This design shift is a break from the previous lighter blue model. The aircraft is designated for Trump’s use in events celebrating the nation’s milestone anniversary.
“Nobody tops this one, and that’s the way we have to have it for our country. Nobody even comes close,” Trump stated.
During the introduction, Trump provided remarks after inspecting the latest addition to the presidential fleet. He expressed plans for a unique flyover leading a group of military jets on July 4.
Trump lauded the plane as “the largest and the greatest in every aspect.” According to him, it will be a “flying White House at a level of luxury no one has ever seen before.”
Friday’s event indicated Trump’s last use of the current fleet would be upon returning from the G7 summit in France this week.
Experts estimate the plane’s value at $400 million, though the U.S. government likely spent much more to prepare it for service.
The involvement of the Qatari government drew bipartisan criticism. Many questioned the ethics and security implications of the gift. Aviation specialists suggest the project’s overall cost, including necessary security enhancements, could exceed $1 billion.
