Conflict Between Israel and Hezbollah: A Major Obstacle to Ending the US-Iran War

The friction between Israel and Hezbollah, once considered secondary in the American-Israeli conflict with Iran, has now emerged as a principal hurdle to resolution.

A tentative agreement between Iran and the United States nearly collapsed on a recent Friday. Lebanon’s situation, which was earlier regarded as a minor aspect, has become crucial in the conflict. Escalating hostilities between Hezbollah, an Iran-supported militant group, and Israel resulted in the suspension of fresh talks in Switzerland between Tehran and Washington.

Although neither party officially cited reasons for halting the discussions, diplomats who preferred anonymity revealed that Iran withdrew due to Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon.

Iran’s new leadership considers Lebanon central to its national security. Israeli actions against Hezbollah in 2024 led to direct conflict conditions with Iran, said Mohanad Hage Ali, a senior fellow at Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut.

This marked the second instance in recent weeks where the Lebanese conflict disrupted US-Iran talks. Previously, Israeli attacks near Beirut led Iran to retaliate with missile strikes on Israel, precipitating further Israeli military responses.

These events followed closely on the heels of the US and Iran signing a preliminary peace agreement. This agreement aimed to cease military actions in Lebanon while ensuring the region’s territorial sovereignty and integrity.
