Janice Nix, 67, was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to 12 years in prison for killing her stepdaughter, Andrea Bernard, in South London in 1978.
Andrea, aged 5 at the time of her death, died after being forced into a scalding bath by Nix. This incident was initially believed to be an accident until Andrea’s brother, Desmond Bernard, provided pivotal testimony revealing the abuse nearly 50 years later.
Desmond, who was 8 when his sister died, shared at the sentencing hearing, “The last memory I have of my sister’s life are my sister’s piercing screams and lying about her death.” His testimony exposed the mistreatment Andrea endured from Nix, including regular beatings and burnings.
For decades, Andrea’s death was classified as an accidental result of sepsis due to severe burns. However, prosecution argued that Nix punished Andrea by forcing her into the hot bath. On the day of the incident, Andrea was in trouble with Nix and was told to skip school for house chores, but left to avoid further abuse.
