Naperville Central’s Emerson Burke concluded her high school soccer career with a remarkable season. A junior bound for Michigan who will graduate early, she set a single-season school record for goals and led her team to their first state championship game since 1995.
“They play her the ball, and she’s always doing something with it,” said Fremd senior forward Sami Serpico, reflecting on Burke’s outstanding performance. “She knows what to do and when, which is hard to achieve. When you have it, you can do everything.”
Burke, named the 2026 Naperville Sun Girls Soccer Player of the Year, demonstrated her versatility by switching from defense to forward, scoring 40 goals and contributing 17 assists for the Redhawks, who ended the season 22-1-1.
Naperville Central junior midfielder Nicole Sacek praised Burke’s adaptability. “She took on the role she had been waiting for, and it’s great to see her excel up front. I’m happy for her. Playing alongside someone like her helps the entire team improve.”
Burke also earned All-American honors and was named the Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year. Despite her individual accolades, she attributes her success to her teammates. “I scored a lot of goals and had a great season, but it’s thanks to my team. The spotlight is on me, but my teammates create the opportunities.”
Burke shattered Naperville Central’s records for goals and points in a season. Previously, Callie Tumilty held the goal record with 23, and Burke’s 97 points far surpassed the previous high of 61.
During a nonconference match, Burke showed her scoring prowess, racing past defenders to score. Over two seasons as a forward, she achieved impressive career stats, tying for second in program history with 53 career goals, ranking third with 148 career points, and fifth with 42 career assists.
“It’s really impressive,” commented Serpico. “She’s the best player I’ve seen, and watching her play is enjoyable.”
Burke’s combination of speed and a powerful shot challenged opponents. Lyons coach Bill Lanspeary noted her skills following her hat trick in a 5-0 victory on April 24. “She moves well off the ball, handles it superbly, and strikes it amazingly well. She’s a top player.”
Troy Adams, Naperville Central’s coach, emphasized Burke’s improvement, particularly in positioning and ball control. “She’s shown considerable growth over two seasons.”
Burke and her teammates practiced regularly, showing dedication to their development. “She’s often at Knoch Park, working hard,” Adams noted. “Her drive and effort are commendable.”
As the program’s fourth All-American, Burke follows a prestigious line including Karen Richter, Casey Krueger, and Callie Tumilty. Her legacy extends beyond the field. “Many kids came to support us, former campers of mine,” Burke said. “Being the best player isn’t my only goal; I aim for excellence off the field too. I’m grateful for all opportunities.”
