A couple decided to adopt a rescue puppy because she seemed to resemble a Labrador. They believed her short, light brown coat and other features matched that breed. However, as the puppy grew, her appearance began to change.
On June 5, the owners shared the dog’s shelter listing and their first reaction on Instagram at @buffy.the.egg.slayer. In the beginning, Buffy’s floppy ears and pink nose were surprising. Labradors typically have black or brown noses according to the United Kennel Club. Buffy’s ears began to stand, deviating from the breed they had in mind.
Eventually, Buffy’s owners realized she wasn’t the Labrador they expected. Her original shelter listing used the term “mongrel,” indicating mixed ancestry. This gave a hint of her complex background, which they initially based on looks alone.
Buffy’s owners express no regret, stating, “Wouldn’t change a thing.” They’ve grown to love her beyond breed expectations. Newsweek reached out to them for comment.
Identifying Shelter Puppies
The American Kennel Club states identifying puppies’ breeds by looks can be hard. Physical traits such as ear shape, body size, and coat texture change as dogs grow. Many traits surface only in adolescence or adulthood, making breed identification challenging.
Research backs up this difficulty. A 2018 study in PLOS ONE examined over 900 shelter dogs in Arizona and California. Many were of mixed ancestry, complicating neat breed categorization. Breed assessments by shelter staff showed inaccuracies, especially with dogs of multiple breeds.
The study emphasized that shelter dogs often have diverse ancestry. It concluded that visual breed identification should be considered an estimate, not a precise classification, especially for mixed breeds like Buffy.
