Police have initiated a death investigation following a fire on the Near South Side, where they discovered a man with a gunshot wound to the head. Authorities reported that officers were called to a fire in the 1300 block of South Wabash Avenue shortly after 5 p.m.
Upon arrival, officers found a 33-year-old man inside a building suffering from a gunshot wound to his head. In addition to the gunshot wound, the man had a neck laceration and had inhaled smoke, Chicago police stated.
The victim was transported in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he later died. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday to determine the exact cause of death.
Police recovered a weapon at the scene. Detectives from the Belmont Area are conducting the investigation, although no offender information is available at this time.
