Avery Miller, a pitcher from Naperville Central, showed significant improvements in her performance as she entered her junior year. With an aim to build both physical strength and technical skills, she hit the gym more frequently. ‘I hit the gym more,’ Miller noted. She committed to visiting the gym at least four times a week and supplemented it with lessons and additional practice in her garage.
Miller also restarted her hitting and pitching lessons. This dedication led to her being named the 2026 Naperville Sun Softball Player of the Year. Miller proved her skills both as a pitcher and a hitter. She completed her third varsity season with an impressive 19-6 record, secured three saves, and achieved a 1.82 ERA. Over 161 2/3 innings, she tallied 213 strikeouts and threw seven shutouts. Her impressive track record in the DuPage Valley Conference, where she went 13-0 in league play, earned her the title of conference pitcher of the year. The Redhawks, assisted by her performance, secured their second consecutive DVC title.
Miller’s enhanced power at the plate was another asset for Naperville Central. Selected for the all-state second team, she posted a .392 batting average with seven doubles, a team-leading nine home runs, and 34 RBIs. Her coach, Andy Nussbaum, acknowledged her growth. ‘She had some pretty good stats as a sophomore, but she came back as a much better player,’ Nussbaum said. Miller’s increased muscle contributed to her added power, evidenced by a two-run walk-off homer against St. Charles East.
Miller improved her pitching by reducing walks and increasing strikeouts. Nussbaum praised her mental toughness, noting her ability to handle pressure. Miller’s efforts helped the Redhawks notch five more wins compared to 2025 and clinch their first regional title since 2015.
Senior shortstop Natalie Lau, set to play for Penn, praised Miller’s influence on the team. ‘She’s definitely a leader in our energy and our team chemistry,’ Lau stated. ‘She truly is one of the best teammates someone can ask for.’
