The Chicago White Sox faced a tough loss against the New York Yankees, ending with a 12-2 score on Tuesday. Pitcher Davis Martin acknowledged the quick unraveling of the game, primarily driven by defensive errors from players Chase Meidroth and Jacob Gonzalez. These errors contributed to a four-run second inning, from which Martin couldn’t recover.
During the fourth inning, Martin retired only one batter, marking the worst defeat for the Sox since the opening day’s 14-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. Martin reflected, “This is New York. A hard place to play. We need to learn to perform in high-pressure road games.” He emphasized the importance of learning from June losses to prepare for potential playoff games come September or October.
With Martin exiting after 3 1/3 innings, giving up nine runs on eight hits and three walks, his ERA jumped from 2.41 to 3.31. He started the season with a 2.00 ERA, but recent performances against the Minnesota Twins and Yankees were less favorable, excluding a stellar shutout against the Atlanta Braves. Manager Will Venable considered Tuesday’s game a temporary setback, affirming Martin’s ability to rebound.
“I’ve bounced back before, and I’ll do it again,” Martin stated, maintaining confidence despite the poor outing where he allowed home runs to Spencer Jones, Ben Rice, and Paul Goldschmidt.
The Sox offense struggled as well, with Andrew Benintendi’s solo home run being the brightest moment early in the game. Hitless until the sixth inning, the Sox fell behind 11-1, with Tristan Peters breaking the slump by singling.
Defensive missteps continued in the third inning. Meidroth’s failure to tag J.C. Escarra allowed a double, and Gonzalez’s overreach left Meidroth without a throw option on an infield hit. Venable defended Gonzalez, a shortstop learning first base, stating, “He probably won’t repeat the mistake.”
Martin failed to recover, losing control and walking multiple batters. He expressed frustration over the inability to support his teammates, remarking, “Most nights I feel I’ll pick them up. It’s a bad night. Tomorrow brings another chance.” Martin plans to reset, aiming for improvement in the upcoming matches.
Overall, this game underscored the learning curve the White Sox face as they strive for postseason positions.
