Grammy Awards to Introduce New Categories in 2027

The Recording Academy has announced exciting changes for the upcoming 69th Grammy Awards, set for February 2027. Five new categories will be introduced, with an emphasis on traditional music. The new awards include:

  • Best Asian Pop Music Performance: This category acknowledges the growing influence of Asian pop culture worldwide, focusing on music from Asian countries, such as K-pop, J-pop, and C-pop, showcasing meaningful use of Asian languages.
  • Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance: Recognizing group efforts and collaborations in R&B music.
  • Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance: Honoring classic pop vocal music.
  • Best Traditional Folk Album: Celebrating traditional folk music.
  • Best Latin Song: A tribute to outstanding Latin music compositions.

In addition to the new categories, existing ones will undergo modifications. Best R&B Performance will be renamed as Best R&B Solo Performance, while Best Folk Album will be renamed Best Contemporary Folk Album.

Grammys CEO Harvey Mason Jr. expressed optimism for the changes, stating, “2027 is going to be an amazing year for the Grammy Awards, and one that reflects the extraordinary growth we’re seeing across music.”

The changes illustrate the diversity and evolution in the music industry. The Recording Academy is aiming to recognize traditional music’s significance, distinguishing it from contemporary styles. These updates also align with the global reach and influence of the Grammys, acknowledging the importance of Asian music.

The 69th Grammy Awards will be a landmark event. The journey begins on July 7 with the start of the online entry period. The first round of voting occurs in October, and nominees will be revealed on November 16. The main event will take place in Los Angeles on February 7.
