Carson Holmes, a senior outfielder for Libertyville, surprised many during the Class 4A state championship game. Despite previous success, he had struggled in recent games, going hitless in his last 10 at-bats with six strikeouts. Facing a challenging situation in the top of the eighth inning at Wintrust Field in Joliet, Holmes returned to an old favorite, a bat he used extensively last year.
Holmes explained, “It was more of a mental cleansing than anything else. What I was doing wasn’t working, so I figured I’d try something else. I decided to go back to old reliable, and it paid off.” His decision proved wise as he delivered a game-winning single to left field, allowing junior pitcher Madden Cotts to score, securing a 7-6 victory over Maine South.
“It was a full-count fastball high and in,” Holmes noted. Initially worried the hit might be caught, he was relieved and thrilled when it landed safely. His teammate, Trevor Wallace, shared how fellow players had faith in Holmes’ choice and his ability to succeed in pressure situations.
The Wildcats finished an impressive season with a 31-10-1 record. They approached the playoffs after a loss, knowing the path ahead wouldn’t be easy. Holmes stated, “Even though I wasn’t playing well, I knew that the team would have my back.” The team’s unity was evident as they built on their previous success.
Coach Matt Thompson supported Holmes during his struggles, emphasizing his importance to the team. After a brief substitution, Holmes returned to the game, ready to contribute. “We had faith in him,” Thompson said, emphasizing Holmes’ consistent practice performance.
Holmes’ climactic moment came after Jack Cenar scored the go-ahead run on a balk, allowing Holmes to calm down before his decisive single. This hit mirrored a key RBI single from the previous year’s championship, making it even more meaningful.
Following the game, Holmes received the game ball, a cherished memento joining his state medals and championship rings. Reflecting on his achievement, Holmes remarked, “I’ve probably watched video of that last at-bat about 30 times, and there are recaps all over social media. I still can’t believe what happened. It was a perfect storm of us doing all the right things to win.”
