Governor Newsom Accuses DOJ of Political Investigation

1 week ago 0

Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom has accused the Justice Department of launching a politically fueled investigation against him and his wife. Newsom claims the Trump administration targets him as he contemplates a presidential run. He stated that federal agents have approached his friends and former employees, seeking records.

Though specifics of the probe remain undisclosed, Newsom’s office indicates the inquiry delves into personal matters involving his family and professional circle. Newsom contends that Trump targets him not merely due to his social media criticism, but because he challenges Trump’s misleading claims and considers a presidential bid.

A source, speaking anonymously, refuted claims of an investigation specifically directed at Newsom. Instead, they described federal probes concerning individuals close to his circle, such as a tax-related investigation of Newsom’s wife.

Further inquiries include Newsom’s ex-chief of staff, Dana Williamson, who faced federal indictment on charges of campaign fund misappropriation from ex-Health Secretary Xavier Becerra. Williamson admitted guilt to bank fraud conspiracy. Newsom isn’t implicated in her case.

The Justice Department has not commented on these events. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche declined to discuss Newsom during a Capitol Hill event with Senator Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley.

These investigations coincide with several DOJ actions against perceived Trump adversaries, including former FBI Director James Comey and others. Newsom proudly acknowledges the challenges from Trump, claiming investigators seek crimes against him that he insists don’t exist.

Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the governor’s spouse, voiced concerns over Trump’s tactics, alleging boundless actions to eliminate opposition.

The President frequently attacks California during his term, halting key emissions reduction endeavors, withholding wildfire recovery assistance, and litigating over transgender student-athlete policies. California retaliates with multiple federal lawsuits. Newsom also opposed a Texas-led redistricting effort supportive of Republicans by promoting successful measures adding Democratic representation in Congress.
