Norwegian Royal’s Son Sentenced for Multiple Offenses

1 week ago 0

Marius Borg Hoiby, the 29-year-old son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit, received a four-year prison sentence following convictions for two rapes and 32 other offenses. Although acquitted of two rape charges, Hoiby was found guilty of assault and abuse in close relationships. The court ordered him to compensate his victims.

Background of the Case

Hoiby faced allegations of sexually assaulting four women from 2018 to 2024 while they were asleep or unable to resist. In total, he faced 40 criminal charges, including assault, drug-related crimes, and restraining order violations. He denied rape allegations but admitted to lesser crimes.

Prosecutors sought a sentence of seven years and seven months. However, defense attorneys argued for acquittal on rape charges and a sentence not exceeding 18 months for admitted offenses. The judgment is subject to appeal, and Hoiby’s lawyer, Ellen Holager Andenaes, indicated that appealing the rape convictions is likely.

Reactions and Context

Prosecutor Sturla Henriksbo celebrated the verdict as a confirmation that nobody, regardless of their connections, is above the law. Hoiby wasn’t present at the court due to health issues but followed the proceedings via video link. The trial spanned six weeks and included testimonies from accusers, alongside evidence from Hoiby’s cellphone.

The case has attracted international interest due to Hoiby’s royal connections. Although raised by the royal couple, he has no official public role or title. This has heightened the case’s impact on the royal family.

Family and Health Implications

The Crown Princess, coping with pulmonary fibrosis and awaiting a lung transplant, has faced health declines during the prolonged case. Legal debates occurred over Hoiby’s potential temporary release, with appeals courts deciding against it.

Disclosures about Mette-Marit’s past interactions with Jeffrey Epstein have also placed the royal family under renewed scrutiny. She has apologized for the contact, emphasizing it was an error in judgment.
