Trump’s Name Removed From Kennedy Center
Workers dismantled the name of President Donald Trump from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington on Saturday. The removal came after a court-ordered deadline, marking less than half a year since Trump’s name was added to the venue.
Court Ruling and Reaction
The change followed a judge’s decision stating that the center couldn’t be renamed without Congressional approval. Kennedy Center’s Executive Director, Charles Matthew Floca, confirmed the removal despite weather-related delays. Trump’s name and references have also been eliminated from the center’s website.
Previously, Trump had replaced the center’s president and board members with trustees who named him chairman. The venue was then temporarily renamed, coinciding with a move considered pivotal for fundraising activities.
Efforts to Halt the Removal
The Trump administration filed an appeal to delay the name removal, arguing that it was essential for attracting donors and funding renovations. However, an appeals court rejected the request on Friday night.
Removal Process and Public Response
Workers assembled scaffolding around the area containing Trump’s name in a pre-dawn effort, using tarps to obscure their work from public view. Despite rain and thunderstorms, hundreds gathered, many expressing their discontent with protests.
Krystal Brewer, a 40-year-old social justice advocate, viewed the removal as an act of accountability. She emphasized the importance of adhering to legal boundaries and resisting unilateral decisions by powerful figures.
Political Opposition
Among the spectators was Rep. Joyce Beatty from Ohio, who initiated the lawsuit against the renaming. She emphasized the need for Trump to follow legal rulings and abstain from further delays.
Towards the end of the process, nurse Mary Foltz described the use of tarps as a metaphor for the Trump administration’s lack of transparency. She saw this as emblematic of broader criticisms faced during Trump’s tenure.
