During the United States Men’s National Team’s (USMNT) World Cup opener against Paraguay, fans witnessed a surprise when Christian Pulisic did not return for the second half. Pulisic, hailing from Hershey, Pennsylvania, currently plays for AC Milan. In the first half, he assisted on a goal by Folarin Balogun and was a key player for the team.
However, when the second half began, Pulisic was replaced by Sebastian Berhalter, the son of former USMNT player and coach Gregg Berhalter. No initial explanation was provided for Pulisic’s substitution, causing concern among fans. During the FOX Sports broadcast, it was mentioned that Pulisic signaled to his family in the stands that he was fine.
After the USMNT secured a 4-1 victory, head coach Mauricio Pochettino explained the reason behind Pulisic’s substitution. According to The Athletic’s Tom Bogert, Pochettino mentioned that Pulisic experienced tightness in his calf after taking a kick and that his removal was a precautionary measure.
Fans were particularly anxious due to Pulisic’s recent injury history. He had previously sat out the Gold Cup last summer after playing 50 club matches with AC Milan and had missed games due to injuries, including a recent lower-back issue reported by ESPN.
Christian Pulisic’s presence is crucial for the USMNT. Although Pochettino described the substitution as precautionary, fans are likely to remain concerned until Pulisic returns to the field in full health.
