Throughout their journey to return to the state playoffs after 11 years, Mario Medina emerged as a crucial leader for Mount Carmel. As a senior catcher, he was known for maintaining team focus and composure. For Medina, reaching the state tournament was a significant achievement. ”This was a big game and a special moment,” Medina reflected. ”I’ve been with these guys for four years, and they feel like brothers to me. There is nowhere else I’d rather be.”
During Friday night’s game, Medina’s efforts shone. The Davenport recruit contributed one of the team’s three hits and executed a vital tag at home plate. Despite his performance, Mount Carmel could not surpass Libertyville, the reigning Class 4A champion, who won 3-1 in the semifinal at Slammers Stadium in Joliet.
Connor Elenteny, a Notre Dame recruit, pitched six innings for Mount Carmel, recording five strikeouts and allowing three earned runs on six hits. Joey Ireland, committed to Illinois, added a double and drew an RBI walk, while Triton recruit Logan Fernandez managed a base hit. ”I just wish I could do more,” said Elenteny.
Looking forward, Mount Carmel will face Naperville Central with a record of 30-10 at 7 p.m. on Saturday for the third-place game. Their title dreams were fought hard until the end. Trailing Libertyville by three runs entering the seventh inning, Mount Carmel drew three walks, and Pancho Vazquez, hit by a pitch, scored. The team closed the gap to 3-1 before Aksel McKnight induced a flyout to center field, ending the game.
”I kept telling everyone, ‘We’ve got to find a way,’ ” Ireland added. ”We almost did at the end. I’m proud of the guys for fighting all year.”
In the third inning, Medina, with senior right fielder Haiden Lajcin, executed a pivotal defensive play. With runners on second and third and two outs, Lajcin made a catch and fired the ball home. Medina caught it and applied a diving tag just before Braden Tolzien reached the plate, keeping the score 3-0. ”I saw the ball and thought, ‘Four, four, four,’” Medina said. ”The throw was perfect, and I dived in for the tag. It felt like a big momentum shift.”
Coach Brian Hurry praised the play, ”That was an unreal play by Haiden and Mario— great throw and tag.”
Medina’s career has been marked by such contributions, always guiding the pitching staff effectively. ”I’ve tried to step up as a leader this year,” Medina noted. ”Whether they felt it or not, that’s what I aimed to do.”
Elenteny echoed the impact Medina had. ”He’s the best anyone can ask for,” he said. ”He doesn’t speak much, but he’s the biggest leader. He’s been like a rock for our team.”
The senior class has left a lasting impact on Mount Carmel’s storied program. ”These seniors have laid down a legacy of tradition and pride over the years we’ve been together,” Coach Hurry noted, cherishing those memories.
