In Midland, Texas, a shooter was confirmed dead after a confrontation with police following an attack that resulted in one fatality and injuries to at least nine others. According to city officials, the active shooter situation concluded several hours after gunfire erupted in a part of the city, eventually ending near a veterinary hospital. Authorities did not specify the cause of the suspect’s death, but Midland Mayor Lori Blong stated that robotic and drone technology confirmed the death.
Witness Andrea Mendias reported hearing a sound reminiscent of a small explosion at the closed veterinary clinic next to her workplace, followed by the arrival of heavily armed police. She observed officers entering the building. Prior to this, Mendias heard what sounded like a series of at least 40 gunshots. Videos captured by Mendias displayed officers exiting an armored vehicle and deploying robots in the vicinity.
Midland Memorial Hospital indicated that four individuals required surgery, and three have already been treated and discharged. Two others are reported to be in stable condition.
Midland, a city with a population of approximately 140,000, is central to Texas’s oil region. This recent incident occurred not far from the location of a 2019 shooting spree, where a recently terminated oil services worker killed seven people and injured 24 others by shooting randomly as he drove through the Odessa and Midland areas. Both cities are located over 300 miles west of Dallas.
